4 ply vs 3 ply face masks: What's the difference?

Lots of face masks have emerged on the market since the start of COVID. As providers of face masks since pre-pandemic, we want to clarify and answer some of your most frequently asked questions about face masks.

Is a 4 ply face mask better than a 3 ply face mask?
4 ply face masks give you the highest level of protection with 4 layers of fabric. Our black face masks are made of 3 non-woven layers and 1 meltblown SMS layer. They're almost the same as a 3 ply mask but with an added extra layer ensuring that you remain protected with 99% bacterial and particle filtration. 

What is a SMS meltblown layer?
A meltblown layer is critical as a filter because it provides a layer that contains droplets by electrostatically absorbing them on the surface. This makes it so that dust, particles, and bacteria cannot infiltrate the mask.

Are 2 ply face masks safe?
A 2 ply face is simply just 2 lower quality sheets of tissue that gets layered together to make a sheet of toilet paper. At AKINGS, we don't recommend 2 ply face masks as the protection you get from them is relatively low.
